Intro
This space is for expressing ourselves in a bookish atmosphere. We are the members of a Lebanese book club, Bookoholics. We've been reading and discussing books for about 14 months. We thought it will be about books and thoughts, that we might become good friends eventually. What happened is that we became a family, a real family of nerds/readers.
When we started out, I told everyone we shouldn't read political or religion books, because these are the things that separate people in our Lebanese society. We read novels, got to know each other with each book discussion. Next thing we knew, one or two book club meetings a month are not enough. And eventually, we started discussing everything, including religions and politics. We agree on some points, and disagree on others. And as terrorism hits our country to divide us, we are even more united, we mourn the losses in any Lebanese region as ardently as we celebrate each other's birthdays.
I am writing to tell the story of our family/book club that is a miniature of Lebanon. We come from different areas and religious/non-religious backgrounds. We do not 'tolerate' each other, we do not 'coexist'. No, we live, love, and celebrate our family ties. Bookoholics reflects the beauty of Lebanon in its wide spectrum of compatible rainbow colors. All the while, we're holding a book or two in our hands.
